the old line quartet
Jazz musicians can view the jazz orchestra, or big band, as the symphony orchestra of jazz. By strict definition the small jazz group, which usually consists of two to five members, can be thought of as the jazz chamber music setting. But music performed ninety-plus percent of the time by such groups is almost completely without detailed arrangements, and is more an expression of the common improvisational language shared by a groups' members. The saxophone quartet, however, gives jazz saxophonists an opportunity to experience this music in a setting that truly parallels the traditional chamber music of the classical music genre.
